Component 1 focuses on services building a sense of community which promotes feelings of belonging and connectedness for all children, families and staff. This has been shown to have a positive effect on children’s mental health. It emphasises the importance of inclusion, positive relationships and collaboration towards building a sense of community for all involved in the service.
Research indicates that children’s sense of belonging is a key protective factor that promotes wellbeing, as well as learning outcomes. Early childhood services that are welcoming and inclusive for all children and families, regardless of any differences or diversity, can create a sense of connectedness and encourage participation by families, carers, and the community.
Ensuring that policies and practices are inclusive and that communications and activities are accessible to all families within the service can enhance a sense of community, which strengthens protective factors for positive mental health. Component 1 also addresses the importance of positive relationships and collaboration with all involved in the service. This kind of positive environment within early childhood services – including warmth, safety, security and positive relationships with adults – is a protective factor for children’s mental health.
