For parents and carers

Raising children can be rewarding and enjoyable, but it is also a challenge - as every parent and carer knows. Research with Australian families shows that parents and carers who have support from family, friends, schools or community-based services are better able to manage the demands of parenting. Since school is such an important part of children’s lives it makes sense for families and schools to work closely together to support children’s mental health and wellbeing.

How schools can help

A key part of KidsMatter involves increasing schools’ capacity to assist parents and carers to access parenting information and support. This includes providing information on children’s development and mental health, creating opportunities for parents and carers to get advice and support at the school, and making links with mental health and family support services in the community. Schools participating in the KidsMatter trial participate in professional development to assist them in implementing each of the KidsMatter components.

Resources for parents and carers

Just as there are lots of different kinds of families, there are also many different ways to parent children. There is no single right way, and there are no perfect parents or carers. However, there are some general principles that research has shown can make a positive difference for children and their families.

KidsMatter has consulted the latest available research to develop our information resources for parents, carers and school staff. Specific resources for parents and carers have been developed on a range of topics relating to the four KidsMatter components. Each topic is discussed using stories, explanation, practical suggestions and examples. There are also links to key organisations and websites where you can get further advice or assistance. Click here for the full list of KidsMatter resources.
