Tips on how to use the Guide

1. Look at the different column headings to become familiar with the range of factors that are important to consider when selecting programs. Note that some columns provide details about the programs (e.g., Who is it for?) and some columns indicate how well the program meets particular criteria (e.g., Is there evidence of the program’s effectiveness?).

2. Review the categorisation key to understand how programs have been rated. Note that an abbreviated quick reference key is included on the table; more details are available by following the ‘detailed categorisation key’ link. The categorisation key can be found below the Categorisation Table.

3. Compare the ratings of relevant programs on factors that are important for schools.

4. Select a number of programs which meet the different criteria to review in more detail. Note that by clicking on the program name, a Program Summary will open in a new window.

5. Return to the Summary Table to assist in a final selection.

As there are so many programs to choose from, schools can sometimes find it difficult to choose a social and emotional learning (SEL) program that will meet the needs of their students. This resource may be useful when selecting a SEL program for you school or comparing other SEL programs to the one you are already using at your school. Write down the programs you are interested in and copy the ratings into the relevant boxes. Compare each program to see which one best fits the needs of your school.
