In the last Shared Thinking post we focused on 'Plan'. This post is about what comes next: 'Do' and 'Review'. When you're further into your journey with KidsMatter, you'll probably find yourself thinking in terms of this continual cycle of planning, implementing and monitoring: over time, it will become second nature. 

'Do'

Chances are, if you're reading this, your Leadership Team has been working on the 'Plan' phase of the 'Plan­–Do–Review' process and has developed an Action Plan for implementing KidsMatter.

The next step of this process is the ‘Do’ phase—implementing the Action Plan at your service and monitoring its progress.

One way to monitor the progress of your Action Plan is in your Leadership Team meetings. You may have set up these meetings as a way to regularly review the progress of your Action Plan, but Leadership Teams can also meet outside of these times if required.

Teams are often concerned about what happens when things don't go according to plan: what do you do if part of your Action Plan isn't working as expected, or if you need more time than you initially anticipated?

This can happen in any continuous quality improvement process and gives you valuable information. It might be helpful to document these discussions so you can keep a track of your thinking and progress. This can inform the 'Review' process.

'Review'

The ‘Review’ phase of the process involves looking back at your Action Plan and reflecting on how KidsMatter was implemented at your ECEC service. When reviewing your Action Plan and progress, you might want to ask:

  • What did we achieve?
  • What has our ECEC service learned? What new skills do we have? What went well?
  • What didn’t work well, or as well as we hoped? Why might this be?
  • Do we need more time to work on a particular goal?
  • What do families and other members of our early childhood community think?

This is a time to celebrate, reflect, and ask others for their perspective and opinions. All of this information can then be used to help your ECEC service to decide where you would like to head next.

Sometimes this will involve revising your Action Plan and re-implementing it because something didn’t work quite as you expected.

Other times, it will involve entering into a planning phase for a new goal or Component of KidsMatter.

Either way, the Review phase of the process involves assessing the current situation at your service, setting new goals and starting to think about a new Action Plan.
