Check your branches regularly
This image represents how our thinking and feeling branches out. We use our current knowledge to make sense of the world then as new experiences take place our branches grow and flourish.
The KidsMatter Learn Many Ways symbol of a tree with branches and strong roots reminds us of a young child’s brain, how important the early years are in laying strong roots or foundations, and how the experiences a child has create the rich branching connections that build effective ways of lifelong learning. If the tree does not have well-developed roots, the rest of its growth will be affected; if it experiences poor conditions, particularly in the early stages of growth, future development will be stunted.
Grow … plants grow, trees grow, seasons grow, our bodies grow, the moon grows and the sun grows as it traverses the sky. Everything in existence grows at one time or another.
However implicit in growth and growing is change and death. The plants can’t grow without other plants and animals dying to create the soil, our bodies can’t grow without the plants and animals that die to provide our food and the days grow longer or get shorter as the seasons pass.
Yarning and ways of communicating are essential in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of being, knowing and doing. They are central to the KidsMatter initiative too.
The Conversations Way symbol is a KidsMatter Early Childhood way of acknowledging the importance of communication, and how essential it is continue to privilege and learn from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives.
The KidsMatter initiative provides a way for everyone to share their perspective and experience with a common goal to grow healthy minds. Each early childhood place, as they engage with KidsMatter will follow their own path shaped by history and community. We must have deep respect and appreciation for this. The 'Acknowledge, Consider, Celebrate' KidsMatter Way reflects this.
Make Safe for positive mental health
Make safe is one of, what we call ‘the KidsMatter ways’. Simply put, it is who we are when we are being with people. We are this way because we want to support good mental health for everyone we come across.
