KidsMatter Early Childhood is a mental health and wellbeing initiative that was trialled in over 100 Australian preschools, kindergartens and long day care services during 2010 and 2011. The Australian Government has funded the initiative to be rolled out to a total of 235 early childhood education and care services by June 2014.

KidsMatter Early Childhood was adapted from KidsMatter Primary, which has shown to make a big difference to the mental health and wellbeing of primary school students.

The KidsMatter Early Childhood pilot was also evaluated by Flinders University and the results of the research were released in 2012.

KidsMatter Early Childhood was developed by the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing, beyondblue, the Australian Psychological Society, and Early Childhood Australia.

KidsMatter Early Childhood aims to help:

  • improve the mental health and wellbeing of children from birth to school-age
  • reduce mental health problems in children
  • achieve greater support for children with mental health problems and their families.
