Calwell Primary School: Reading the climate
Calwell Primary School is located about 17 kms south of the City of Canberra and has an enrolment of 350 students from Preschool to Year 6. The school introduced KidsMatter Primary because it was an approach to build communication with the community. When the school examined the results of surveys for Component 1, and changed the format of parent meetings changed. Consequently more families attended events at the school. Since receiving a grant for establishing a Community Room, the local child and family centre has held parenting courses and families are accessing the space.

Trinity Christian School: Things happen because of KidsMatter

Trinity Christian School is a Kindergarten to Year 12 co-educational day school. It is located in the southern suburbs of Canberra and has an enrolment of 1,144 students. It was a pilot KidsMatter Primary school in 2006, and staff are now undertaking component training for the second time. The Action Team Coordinator confirms that the new resources are ‘bringing KidsMatter Primary to life’ in the school. The story describes an initiative to involve parents in a Multicultural Day when 13 different communities were represented. It outlines the successful approach to assisting students (and parents) to make the transition from preschool to the first days in the Kindergarten classroom. The story also outlines the focus on student leadership particularly through the Years 10 and 11 peer leaders who work with Years 6 and 7 students.

Wanniassa School sends postcards to parents
Wanniassa School became involved with KidsMatter Primary in 2010. Teachers, students and parents now talk about mental health as an everyday topic.  After exploring possibilities in Component 3, Working with Parents and Carers, the staff have taken initiatives to build links with the parent community. They decided to create a welcoming space within the school for parents. Parent Link has been so successful that they have had to extend the hours. It is now open during school hours, and offers parents opportunities to meet, explore a range of resources and build links with each other.
