Weir State School is a large school in Townsville, located on the banks of the Ross River in Townsville. There are currently more than 900 enrolments, with children coming from very diverse backgrounds. More than 27% of students are of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander background, and a majority are mobile, moving from other areas in Australia. The school works hard to ensure this diversity is acknowledged.
A couple of years ago, the school needed to build its spirit and morale. It wanted to be a place that was valued and positive - not just “a place where kids came every day”. At this time, the school started engaging students in decision making. This led to the creation of a school mascot, ‘Pos’, and student leadership. Find out more in this school story.
