These KidsMatter Primary school stories were developed to show different ways that schools have implemented KidsMatter Primary.

Illawarra Primary School, Blackman's Bay - Including students in the playground
The school, located about 16 kms south of Hobart, includes a Kindergarten and 18 Prep to Year classes, with 410 students enrolled. It was involved in the pilot for KidsMatter Early Childhood in 2009. The school story describes some of the initiatives taken to implement KidsMatter Primary since 2011. It focuses on the actions to support the theme of Component 1, ‘positive school community’,  in addressing the diverse needs of students particularly in the context of the playground. Staff had observed the isolation of some students and developed new opportunities to attract them to become involved in different activities. Initially, teachers were responsible for setting up equipment such as lego, dress-ups or art tables. In the last year, students have taken responsibility for organising the activities including karaoke sessions and gardening. Staff are clear that the lunchtime activities program has contributed to the development of student wellbeing and added to protective factors for their sense of belonging to the community at Illawarra.

Penguin Primary School: ‘Yes, we are a KidsMatter school’
Penguin Primary School is located 130 kms north-west of Launceston and has 350 students. One of the reasons for introducing KidsMatter Primary to Penguin Primary School was to develop a school-wide method for working with students to develop ways to work with students to increase their self-awareness and social responsibility. The school has an annual VIP Day and students invite family members and other significant people into the classroom. This was the perfect opportunity to introduce the focus on social and emotional health and wellbeing to the community in 2011 when over 1,000 people wore a VIP badge.

Glen Huon Primary School  - KidsMatter is part of what we do

The school Is located about 50 kilometres south of Hobart, Tasmania on the Huon River.
